#1 What is Fi?

The Concept of FI or Financial Independence is the first part of the acronym of FIRE. FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. This financial movement focuses on obtaining finances and resources from extreme savings or investing to arrive at a place where one’s needs are met and gives a variety of choices for one’s future. The FIRE concept encapsulates the individual being the sole decision maker of time allocation. Most individuals who choose to pursue FIRE don’t actually retire early or stop working, but they may leave their original employment retirement to pursue other career options where monetary compensation is replaced by intrinsic value and passion. These avenues may include self-employment, side hustles, or contract work, rather than the daily grind.

The FIRE concept originated with the best selling book entitled Your Money or Your Life written by Vicki Robin and Joe Dominguez in 1992. This financial approach was brought back to society by a 2010 book authored by Jacob Lund Fisher, Early Retirement Extreme. The reemergence of FIRE has been the topic of countless articles, blogs, and podcasts giving society a different framework to consider when examining their financial status and their future plans.

In my blog I will reference FIRE frequently, but my focus is on the FI aspect. Acquiring resources and money to allow freedom for my future self is the center of my attention.  I hope to investigate paths to FI by exploring income streams and investing strategies. Examining others’ successes and failures along with sharing my own defeats and triumphs. If you’ve forgotten how to dream and think there isn’t an alternative to working until you’re in old age, take a look at what I’ll uncover in my posts and please join me on my quest for FI
